Bug Filter - Bug on Face Prank is exactly what it sounds like - a fun little app that lets you add realistic-looking bugs crawling on people's faces in your photos. It was first launched back in 2020 and you can grab it from the Google Play Store for free. No registration needed to start using it, which is nice. The app has racked up over 500,000 installs on Google Play so far. It's completely free to download and install, though there are some in-app purchases if you want extra bug options and there are ads that pop up here and there. The whole point of this app is to prank your friends by making it look like a spider or cockroach is creeping across their face.
Using the app is pretty straightforward. After you download it from Google Play and install it on your phone, you just pick a photo from your gallery or snap a new one. Then you choose which bug you want - there are different creepy crawlies like spiders, cockroaches, and ants. The app uses AR tracking to place the bug on the person's face, and it moves around like its actually crawling. A tip I picked up is to make sure the person's face is clearly visible and well-lit in the photo, otherwise the tracking gets confused. You can also adjust the size and speed of the bug to make it look more realistic. For the best prank results, send the edited photo to a friend who has a fear of bugs and watch their reaction.
I've tried similar apps like FaceBug and Insect Face Filter, but Bug Filter - Bug on Face Prank stands out because the bugs look way more real. Those other apps have cartoonish bugs that nobody would fall for. This one actually makes me double-take when I see the photos. I chose this app over others because the tracking is smoother and the bug movements feel natural. Plus, the developer Hades Bit keeps updating it with new bug types. Its not a complicated app at all, which I appreciate - just open it, add a bug, and youre done.
Features
- 😱 Realistic bug animations - Compared to FaceBug which uses flat 2D sprites, Bug Filter uses 3D models that cast shadows and move with natural crawl patterns. The bugs even climb over facial features like noses and eyebrows, which makes the prank way more convincing.
- 🕷️ Multiple bug types - You get spiders, cockroaches, ants, and even a centipede option. FaceBug only offers two bug types while this app gives you five choices. Each bug has unique movement styles too, so the spider skitters while the ant marches.
- 🔄 Automatic face tracking - The app locks onto facial landmarks and keeps the bug positioned correctly even if the face turns. Insect Face Filter loses tracking when the person tilts their head, but Bug Filter handles angles much better.
- 🎨 Customization controls - You can adjust bug size, speed, and direction of movement. You can also pause the bug mid-crawl to make it look like its resting. No other prank app gives you this level of control over the bug behavior.
Pros
- 🆓 Completely free to download - Unlike FaceBug which hides its best bugs behind a paywall, Bug Filter gives you access to most content right after you install the app from Google Play. You can start pranking immediately without spending anything.
- 📱 No registration required - You don't need to create an account or sign in. Just download the app from Google Play, install it, and youre ready to go. Insect Face Filter forces you to register first, which is annoying.
- 🔄 Regular updates - The developer adds new bugs and features every few months. Bug Filter has actually improved since I first installed it, while FaceBug hasnt seen an update in over a year.
Cons
- 📺 Too many ads - The app shows an ad after every photo you edit. FaceBug only shows ads every third edit. Its frustrating when youre trying to quickly make a prank photo and have to wait through a 30-second ad.
- 💸 In-app purchases feel overpriced - The premium bug pack costs $4.99, which seems steep for an app that only does one thing. You can unlock everything in FaceBug for $2.99. I haven't bought them because the free bugs work fine for me.
- 🔋 Drains battery fast - Using the AR face tracking chews up battery life quickly. I notice my phone gets warm after just a few minutes of use. Other bug apps don't seem to have this power consumption issue.
- 📷 Limited export options - You can only save photos as JPEG files with the Bug Filter logo watermark. FaceBug lets you export without watermark and supports PNG format. The watermark kind of ruins the prank if you forget to crop it out.
